Psychologist - Comes in Waves

-

Such a beautifully understated song which just builds and builds. Strangely can’t find the video for it anywhere now - was out months ago and portrayed his twin brother being pregnant and giving birth to the most adorable child. If I can remember it correctly… in the mean time though, (because I will find that video again, somehow) this is more than enough.

What a beautiful man he is.

Norm MacDonald treats Conan with another visit. I love this man too much. Jokes about Sweden, gay prostitution and Paul Newman.

R. Kelly - I Wish

-

Last Saturday I saw R. Kelly in Manchester… absolutely amazing. Didn’t know what to expect - why the heck is he touring anyway? But it easily exceeded any non-existing expectations. The whole night went between high and low, some examples:

*  Being part of an audience made up of wannabe gangstarrrs, blonde babes, iced up hoochies, real P.I.M.P.S. and 2% ‘normal’ people - why can’t every gig be like this?

    *  R. Kelly simulating oral sex after having sung the lines ‘come on, open baby’ whilst spreading an imaginary lady’s legs…

      *  The whole audience joining in the chorus for ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ - Bon Iver’s ‘The Wolves act II’, eat your heart out.

      -

To make it all even better, he played ALL my favourite songs - ‘Bump n’ Grind’, ‘Down Low’, ‘You Remind Me of Something’, ‘When a Woman’s Fed Up’, ‘Your Body’s Callin’, ‘She’s Got That Vibe’…. and obviously, ‘I Wish’.

        -

Top 5 gigs of ALL time.

Couldn’t be more excited about seeing Kanye West at Way Out West this summer. Especially as I realised the other day that I did see him 4 years ago at the very same festival. Was such an amazing show as well - I’m clearly getting oldddd.

Lykke Li - Love Out of Lust

        -

I’ve only just started to listen to Wounded Rhymes quite recently… was a bit thrown off by first single ‘Get Some’ so never gave the album a real chance. Really love this song though, her beautifully understated vocals and the soft, thumping drum beat.

The Luyas - Too Beautiful to Work

        -

Perfection. Another great Canadian band - The Luyas are coming to England in May. Please let me not have exams then… Also listen to their song ‘Cold Canada’ here.

        Braids - Lemonade

        -

Tumblr revival. Realised I haven’t really posted stuff for ages, so thought I should add a song from one of my favourite albums at the moment, Native Speaker, which was released last month. Braids are an experimental pop band from Canada and are younger than me. Their music definitely shows an influence from Animal Collective, but sort of lovelier (why does this word always look wrong in writing?) with lush female vocals over ambient melodies. Have a listen to this and especially Glass Deers and Same Mum off the same album.

Bikini - I Remember Being Young

        -

There are only two videos for this song on the entiiire youtube. One shows boring and badly captured landscape photos from Norway and one caters for everyone. Easy choice. I can safely bet on the fact that 93% of you will either like the song or the babezzz.

Avaaz have joined South African activists in a campaign to put an end to ‘corrective rape’ - the vicious practice of raping lesbians to ‘cure’ their sexuality.

        -

In their words: Let’s call on President Zuma and the Minister of Justice to publicly condemn ‘corrective rape’, criminalise hate crimes, and lead a critical shift against rape and homophobia.

        Warpaint - Undertow

        -

I can’t stop listening to this song or watch the dreamy, fuzzy video. They’re playing Leeds in May, better get tickets soon.

Title says it all - ‘Pale kid raps fast’

        -

Well, it says most anyway. It doesn’t really say all does it? It definitely doesn’t say how much he reminds me of Michael Cera. Except that he’s cooler. And funnier. And more talented. Pale boy that is.

        This kid is amazing.
